Honoring Spirits

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Two Harbors, Minnesota

On a night where many traveled far and wide to pay their respects to the 29 souls lost on the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, I too did the same.

Over the years on many sides of this Great Lake, I’ve experienced the feeling of someone or something on its shoreline near me. The feeling of being watched without a soul in sight. It never seemed harmful just feeling watched from in the lake.

On this night, that energy was stronger than normal. Not just from everyone there, but more on the lake itself. It was quite overwhelming.

As I soaked in the moment, I got myself in position and camera ready to capture this moment. The evening skies were just stunning. I began to take some test images beforehand.

Blue hour emerged, and the energy just shifted. I locked in to capture this moment. There’s something truly special about blue hour and this energy I felt was something otherworldly. Words couldn’t really describe what I was feeling in this moment.

Many lives were lost along Lake Superior’s ice cold grasp and this lighting at Split Rock made that clear. In ways, I saw it as guiding the spirits back to shore and honoring those who were lost in this body of water.

From the SS Bannockburn to the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and many others who were lost. You will never be forgotten.

Rest Peacefully.
